Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
